Dear Friends,
The simple mathematical model presented by Prof. Georgantzas shows an
exponential growth of immigrant population. Others can use the model with
their numbers, but it clearly raises the question: does the government have
an immigration policy? Is the proposed immigration law the product of this
policy? How many and what kind of workers can the Greek economy support?
How many children of immigrant origin can be educated by the country's
public education system? How many more people can be served by the health
and other social services of the country? The need to answer such questions
is especially pressing for a country that is going through a very severe
economic crisis. Without an immigration policy that harmonizes the needs
and capacity of the country for immigrants with the needs of the
naturalized citizens, many of these citizens will end up in ghettos where
poverty, drugs, crime and severe social tensions would reign (as the case
is in many large cities of America and Europe) with well known spillover
effects.
We should demand from the government as well as from the political parties
of the country an answer to the question: what is their immigration policy?
What is the impact of this policy on the future of the country?
